XEmacs is a popular editor for A+. The A+ distributions include Elisp files to customize XEmacs for use with A+.

Click on "Releases" under the "Download" section of the vertical menu to find a version of the GNU C/C++ compiler suitable for you system. The compiler versions used on given platforms are listed in the INSTALL file of the source distribution.

If you're building from source on Solaris you can use the GNU "sed" program rather than the native one to get around apparent line length limitations. Issues with the native sed affect generation of the Makefile used to install the reference manual.
